The 500 Gallon Bucket does not have a “kill” source; however, we provide instruction on how to use chlorine, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, water tablets, and iodide to help kill various bugs and bacteria. This disinfection can be done in the bucket prior to sending it through the filter. Boiling water is the most effect way to disinfect water – but it will still contain dead carcasses of the bugs it kills. Treated water can then be used through the 500 Gallon Bucket to block any live bugs left, the dead carcasses of cysts, and help relieve any odors left in the water from the chemicals. This improves the taste, smell, and health of even treated water.

If the source water is dirty (leaves, floating debris, muck, etc.) it is recommended to filter the water into the bucket with a towel, screen, shirt, nylon stocking, etc. to help extend the amount of water that can flow through the filter without cleaning.

The 500 Gallon Filter can be cleaned out if debris does cover the filter facing. Its filter can be replaced when needed (generally after heavy use and before storage – or after 500 to 1200 gallons of usage maximum – depending upon the amount of chemicals it has removed.
